Sony Xperia Z3 Compact now officially available for purchase in the U.S.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is now officially available for purchase in the U.S., selling unlocked and SIM-free for $529.99, directly through Sony's store.

Sony Mobile has started selling the Xperia Z3 Compact in the U.S., offering the unlocked, SIM-free model in four color options: black, white, orange, and green.

Earlier this week, we reported that the Sony Mobile Store for the U.S. was listing the Xperia Z3 Compact as available for purchase unlocked. At that time, however, clicking the "Buy Now" button would redirect users to the Sony eShop, but wouldn't allow them to actually buy the handset.

Sony has fixed the issues in the meantime, and the "Buy Now" button on the Sony Mobile Store product page for the smartpone now works as it should: it will take you to the Sony eShop, where you can select your desired color for the Xperia Z3 Compact and place your order.

Sony made no mention of whether any carrier will be offering the Xperia Z3 Compact subsidized in the future, but for now interested customers can buy it only in unlocked form, for full retail price straight from the company.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact has drawn plenty of interest since its debut and many U.S. consumers were eagerly waiting for its arrival, as the smartphone comes with uncompromising specs for the "Mini" category.

As a reminder, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact sports a 4.6-inch display with an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage capacity, with microSD support for additional memory of up to 128GB. The handset further boasts a 20.7-megapixel rear shooter with auto focus, a 2.2-megapixel front camera, and a 2,600 mAh battery. The Xperia Z3 Compact is IP65/IP68 certified for water and dust resistance, and it also comes with PS4 Remote Play, which allows it to function as a gaming console remote. On the software side, Android 4.4 KitKat runs the show.

While the larger Xperia Z3 will launch in the U.S. through T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless, it looks like the Xperia Z3 Compact may be available only in unlocked form, SIM-free, from Sony itself.
