Tizen OS Samsung Z1 reportedly a hit, successor already in the works?

The Samsung Z1 just recently made its debut as the company's first Tizen-powered smartphone, and a successor may already be in the works.

Samsung has been working on Tizen for a few years now, as the company is reportedly looking to loosen its reliance on Google's Android operating system. The first Tizen-powered smartphone was rumored for a long time, and after various leaks and several delays it finally became official last month as the Samsung Z1.

More specifically, the Samsung Z1 hit the Indian market on Jan. 14, then made its way to Bangladesh on Feb. 3. The handset doesn't boast the high-end specs rumored at some point, as it launched with mid-range specifications to accommodate an affordable price tag. Tizen has apparently stirred plenty of interest, as the Samsung Z1 sold quite well in India and Bangladesh.

According to a recent report from Business Korea, Samsung has already sold over 100,000 Z1 units in India so far, and roughly 20,000 units in Bangladesh. Considering that roughly 500,000 phones are sold each month in Bangladesh, it means that the Samsung Z1 accounted for four percent of all smartphone sales in the two weeks after its launch.

This sales achievement is even more impressive when taking into account that the Samsung Z1 brought a new smartphone OS to market, in a world with countless handsets running established operating systems.

A new report (via GforGames) now claims that Samsung is already working on a second-generation Tizen-powered smartphone. Considering the impressive success of the Samsung Z1 so far, this news doesn't sound too farfetched. It would make sense for Samsung to want to build on the success of its first Tizen-powered smartphone and take things to the next level with a new iteration.

The report doesn't offer any information regarding the specifications of the Samsung Z2, or whatever it may be called, but the handset may come with higher-end specifications compared to the current Z1.

Until some concrete evidence or an official announcement, however, it all remains in the rumor state at this point. The Samsung Z1 just made its way to market recently, and it will most likely be a while until its successor is ready to debut. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we hear more, but take everything with a grain of salt in the meantime.
