HTC One M7 Android 5.1 Lollipop may come to carrier versions after all

Carrier versions of the HTC One M7 may get a taste of the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop after all, as the company is taking fans' criticism into account.

For those unaware of the context, here's the deal: HTC Vice President of Product Management, Mo Versi, announced that the older HTC One M7 will not receive any more updates (except for the Google Play Edition model, which is still set to get Android 5.1 next month). As expected, this drew plenty of criticism from One M7 owners and HTC fans in general, and the company is apparently now rethinking its strategy.

In a new tweet, Mo Versi bow said that HTC is taking user feedback into account, suggesting that the two-year-old One M7 may get a taste of Android 5.1 Lollipop after all, even for the carrier versions.

"I heard you all on M7 5.1 for Carrier versions. Many of the fixes are already in our current SW, but understand your concerns. Stay tuned," reads the tweet in question.

While the executive makes no concrete promises, the tweet does indicate that carrier versions of the HTC One M7 should receive an update to Android 5.1 Lollipop in the following months.

The latest Android 5.1 is not exactly a notably major update, but it does bring several bug fixes and improvements to the table, as well as a few new features that should enhance the whole experience. The most touted new feature of Android 5.1 is called Device Protection, which can keep your device locked until you log in with your Google account, so in case you lose your phone or it gets stolen, it will be useless to someone else. Device Protection will keep the handset locked even if someone restores it to factory settings.

All in all, the HTC One M7 is nonetheless two years old now, and it pretty much reached the end of its update support. That said, if carrier versions of the handset do receive Android 5.1, it will most likely be the last update for the aging smartphone. HTC should offer more information in this regards shortly, and we'll keep you posted as soon as we hear more.
