Android Phones Get Biggest Share Of The Brazilian Market

A recent analysis of the smartphone market suggests that in Brazil Android-based smartphones are now the majority. Google's mobile operating system has become the absolute leader in the South American country and takes a share of 89.5 percent of the market.

According to research released by consulting firm Kantar Worldpanel, the runner-up operating system is Windows Phone, which now represents a 5.9 percent share of the market. The consulting firm has released the figures for July 2015. In the same month, Apple's iOS accounted for around 3.5 percent of the market. Among Android versions in use, the Lolipop is on top position, being the OS of choice of one in five users.

A previous research from nearly a year ago found noticeably different numbers. According to reports, back in September 2014, Android was also on the top of the list, with 88.2 percent. However, back then the iOS came second with a 6.1 percent market share. Windows Phone was running on 3.6 of all smartphones in the same month.

Recently, Apple unveiled that its new streaming music service would be also coming to Android later in the fall. This step might also further support the dominant position of Google Android on the Brazilian market.

According to a separate research study conducted by IT Data, the top selling smartphones in Brazil are Android-based. Among the models, the top of the list is Samsung's Galaxy Grand Prime while the second is Motorola's Moto G.

However, behind those numbers that can look promising,  the forecast for smartphone sales in Brazil is not so positive. The sales in the South American countries have slowed down due to the recession, and the downward trend is set to continue, according to analyst firm IDC. The predictions made by its analysts expect that sales for the second quarter will drop by 12 percent in comparison to the year 2014.

According to IDT, after its analysts predicted at the first growth of at least 5 percent, the current economic situation in Brazile force them now to expect some negative volumes. IDC Brazil analyst Leonardo Munin predicted at first that 63.5 million smartphones will be sold in Brazil in the year 2015, but has has now adjusted his forecast to only 54 million units.
