2016 Toyota 4Runner Review: A Compelling V6-Equipped SUV With Exceptional Off-Road Capability

New for the 2016 4Runner is an optional third-row seat that can increase the passenger capacity to seven. Also offered is the new Quicksand paint for the 4Runner TRD trim. All available trims are integrated with the latest Entune version that provides smartphone integration and adds iPhone interface.

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner has a reliable spring and suspension settings that promotes decent cornering ability and ride comfort. The 4Runner's 4.0-liter 6-cylinder sole powertrain coupled to a 5-speed automatic gearbox allows 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. torque.

Three drivetrain choices are offered which include the 2-wheel drive, part-time 4WD and full-time 4WD with limited-slip and locking center differential. Towing is one of the strong point the 4Runner has which rates at 4,700 pounds. On efficiency, 2WD 4Runner models earn 17/22 city/highway mpg, while AWD versions make 17/21 mpg.

Based on a review made by Edmund for the 2016 4Runner, this rugged body-on-frame SUV is designed with outstanding off-road capability unlike most rivals, but lacks a bit of refinement for daily driving. But thanks to the potent 6-cylinder engine with an efficient 5-speed automatic and responsive steering column, the 4Runner becomes more maneuverable.

For serious off-roaders, the 4Runner TRD Pro Series model is more engaging with customized Bilstein off-road shocks. The TRD Pro has unique aluminum wheels, Nitto Terra Grapler rubbers, additional skidplates and new Quicksand color.

Highlighted standard equipment inside the versatile cabin of the new 4Runner are power-adjustable front seats, Entune Audio Plus, dual-zone air conditioning, Bluetooth audio interface, rearview camera and water-resistant eat fabric. Higher trims add 15-speaker JBL sound, 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, leather-trimmed seats, moonroof and navigation system.
