WWDC 2026: Apple macOS 27 Golden Gate Brings New Safari Features

WWDC 2026’s macOS 27 showcase showed off its Safari upgrades.

Apple's WWDC 2026 showcased many of macOS 27 Golden Gate's new features, particularly the long list of experiences heading to Safari.

In the latest keynote, Apple shared many of the must-see features on the native browser app in this latest update, which now available to experience and preview via the macOS 27 Developer Beta.

Automatic Tab Groups

One of the headline Safari features in macOS 27 is the ability to automatically organize open tabs using Apple Intelligence into topics. When turned on, Safari analyzes the content of each page and groups tabs by shared themes, such as vacation planning or school project research.

The feature is entirely optional, and when turned on, Safari can add them to existing groups automatically and choose to save them later on.

Notify Me

Notify Me is another Apple Intelligence feature coming to Safari on macOS 27 Golden Gate. The feature lets users set conditions for when they want to receive a notification based on changes to a specific webpage.

Users can control its frequency and have it run daily, monthly, or on specific days of the week. Users can also choose the exact time it should run.

With natural language, users may describe the exact kind of page changes they want to be notified of.

Describe an Extension (Custom)

Safari on macOS 27 is also introducing a new way to create browser extensions without any technical knowledge required. Users can simply describe in plain language what they want their extension to do and how it should behave, and Safari can build it from that description alone.

During the WWDC 2026 keynote, Apple demonstrated the feature by having a user describe a recipe-saving extension. Safari generated it on the spot, complete with a toolbar button and note-taking functionality, along with controls for which sites were allowed to interact with it.

New Refresh Gesture (Swipe Down to Refresh)

Mac users running macOS 27 Golden Gate will be able to pull down from the top of a webpage to refresh it, mirroring the gesture already available on iPhone and iPad. As the pull-down motion is used, a spinning refresh indicator appears, and once the page is pulled far enough, Safari reloads it entirely.

Developer builds of macOS 27 have already confirmed the gesture is working as shown during the keynote.

Passwords Update

Safari on macOS 27 will also gain the ability to automatically and proactively change compromised passwords on a user's behalf, without requiring the user to manually track down each affected account and update it themselves.

The feature ties into the broader Passwords app updates announced across iOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate.

More Features Announced by Apple

There are more under-the-hood improvements to Safari as part of macOS 27 Golden Gate as announced by Apple. They include:

  • Faster start page loading
  • Faster web application performance
  • Faster JavaScript handling
  • Smoother animations and graphics
  • Smoother scrolling
  • Smoother start page resizing
  • Enhanced power efficiency in macOS

On visionOS 27, Safari is also gaining support for multiple tab views.

macOS 27 Golden Gate is expected to be available to users this fall alongside iOS 27 and the rest of Apple's 2026 software updates.
