Reddit has released a new feature that expands user engagement and expression as it adds the capability to share video comments on user posts in the platform.
The feature is already available but comes with a few conditions worth knowing before expecting to see it everywhere.
Reddit Now Lets You Post Video Comments
The company has officially launched video in comments, giving users a new way to respond to posts and discussions beyond text, images, and GIFs. Redditors can now drop a video directly into a comment box, either by uploading an existing clip or recording one on the spot.
To use the feature, users can tap or click the video icon that now appears in the comment box, then choose to either record a new video or upload one from their device. The addition rounds out what has already been a fairly expressive comment system on Reddit, which has supported images and GIFs in comments for some time.
Video takes things further by letting users respond in a more direct and personal format, whether that means recording a quick reaction or sharing a relevant clip they found elsewhere.
One of the more practical use cases for video comments is the platform's long-running AMA format. In the past, a celebrity or public figure participating in an AMA would often record a single video answering multiple questions at once.
Video comments could allow them to respond to individual questions more directly and stay more involved in the conversation as it unfolds in real time.
What's The Catch?
The feature does not automatically apply across the entire platform as video comments are only available in public, safe-for-work subreddits, and individual moderators need to enable it for their community before users can take advantage of it. That means private subreddits and any community marked as NSFW are currently excluded from the feature entirely.
It also means the rollout will be uneven, depending on how quickly moderators across different communities choose to switch it on.
For subreddits that do enable it, participation is still entirely optional, with users who prefer text-only responses under no obligation to use the new format, and the experience for readers remains opt-in as well.
Reddit to Prioritize Safety With Video Comments
Reddit was careful to address how video content in comments will be handled before it reaches other users. The company confirmed that video comments will be run through its safety systems before they are displayed on the site, and videos will not autoplay, respecting users' individual audio settings.
Those guardrails reflect the platform's awareness that opening up video across its comment sections is a significant change. Reddit has been steadily building out its content moderation tools over the past few years, and the pre-display safety review is designed to prevent video comments from becoming a vector for harmful or rule-violating content.
Given that moderators also have to manually enable the feature among subreddits, the rollout is structured to give communities control over how and when video comments appear in their spaces.
