WinZip Android App Now on Google Play – Top Features & Availability

Corel company WinZip Computing introduced WinZip® for Android on Wednesday, June 20. The world's No.1 zip utility is now available on Google Play as a free mobile app, making it easy to view, open, and save zip files on an Android device. WinZip for iOS was launched earlier this year and it has already seen more than a million downloads. WinZip for Android builds on that success, aiming to bring the same functionality to Google's mobile platform as well.

With the new version for Android, WinZip can now be used across all of today's most popular platforms: Windows, Mac, iOS, and now Android. WinZip tools include the ZipSendTM file delivery and ZipShareTM Facebook Web services for online and social media sharing. Android users can also view, open and save zip files attached to an email, downloaded from the Web, or stored on an SD memory card.

WinZip for Android is compatible with version 2.1 éclair, 2.2 Froyo, 2.3 Gingerbread, 3.x Honeycomb and Android 4.x Ice Cream Sandwich. The Android version is now available as a free English app from Google Play, and will soon reach other popular app stores.

With WinZip for Android, users can now view supported image, text and Web files received as a zip file directly within the WinZip app. The app also works with other popular file formats with third-party integration. Users can also open encrypted zip files, including AES128 and AES256, copy unzipped content to the clipboard and paste into an email or another app, or save the latest zip file extracted for later access. Moreover, the WinZip for Android will automatically unzip and install apps (.apk files) downloaded as .zip files from Google Play or Amazon's Appstore.

Supported photo and image formats include .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .bmp, and .gif. Supported text files include .rtf, .csv, .txt, .ini, .inf, .bat, .js, .log, .xml, .css, .java, .cs, .h, .m, .cpp, .c, .sql, .properties, while supported Web files include .htm, .html, .jsp, and .asp. WinZip for Android also allows users to open file types in third-party apps, such as .doc and .docx Word documents, .xls and .xlsx Excel spreadsheets, .ppt and .pptx PowerPoint presentations, as well as PDF files (.pdf).

"With our free Android app, we're extending the power of WinZip to new mobile customers and delivering and essential tool for opening zipped files on the go," WinZip president Patrick Nichols said in a press release. "Our first mobile app, WinZip for iOS, enjoyed great reception and has already been downloaded by more than a million iPhone and iPad users. Now, with apps for Android and iOS, we're offering WinZip tools to customers on both of the industry's most popular mobile platforms," he added. "Whether you're using Android, iOS, Mac or Windows, WinZip has the tools you need, designed specifically for your favorite phone, tablet and system."
