Facebook Messenger Gains iOS 10 CallKit Support In Latest Update

Facebook has just recently updated its FB Messenger app, allowing it to support Apple's CallKit framework which was introduced alongside iOS 10.

Facebook pressed a major update to its Messenger software earlier this month. iPhone users who already updated their devices with iOS 10 can now take advantage of Apple's new CallKit framework, which was designed to make audio (VoIP) calls from Messenger work the same way normal cellular calls work. The update also comes with full support for Lock screen and Phone integration.

As per reports, the incoming calls via Facebook Messenger will already show the caller's Messenger profile information alongside several control buttons like mute, keypad, and a speakerphone toggle. Also, aside from standard in-call buttons that will now come to FB Messenger, the lock screen experience will also be better, offering custom buttons that can launch a video conversation or jump straight into Messenger.

Prior the release of iOS 10, VoIP calls and messaging notifications were once a dull banner notification similar to WhatsApp's Lock screen dull banner notifications. Multitasking is even possible now, allowing users to accept an incoming Messenger call while working on another function or feature of their mobile device.

To return to the Messenger call at any time, users can just tap the iOS standard in-call banner at the top of the screen.

In addition, VoIP calls done or taken from FB Messenger will now be recorded in the Phone's Recents section. FB Messenger contacts can now be added to Phone's Favorites as well. The Carplay support, on the other hand, allows Messenger calls while driving with CarPlay support.

The FB Messenger does not take advantage of the SiriKit framework just yet so users cannot at this time ask Siri to message or call a person on Messenger on their behalf. Facebook-owned app WhatsApp recently implemented support for both CallKit and SiriKit.

Facebook Messenger can be downloaded for free and its basic features will run on any device with iOS 8 version or later.
