AMD's Seventh Generation Bristol Ridge Provides Impressive Performance

Tech reports confirm that AMD's Bristol Ridge APUs provide a significant improvement in performance over previous generations CPUs and APUs.

According to AnandTech, AMD officially launched over the last two weeks their seventh generation Bristol Ridge processors as well as related chipsets and the new AM4 motherboard socket. The one CPU and seven APUs being launched for OEM systems are based on a high-frequency A12 part using AMD's seventh generation microarchitecture dubbed Excavator v2.

These new AMD processors are all build on the Bristol Ridge processor models catering for notebooks, launched earlier this year. However, this time around AMD is focused on the desktop.

According to Techfrag, the top tier AMD Bristol Ridge APU is A12-9800. This is AMD APU works with the new AM4 motherboard chipsets.

The AMD A12-9800 Bristol Ridge APU offers a significant improvement in efficiency as well as in power. The processor is using an AM4 motherboard, features AMD Wraith cooler and can be overclocked to 4.8 GHz.

The tech experts at the specialized publication have tested an AMD A12-9800 Bristol Ridge APU on an ASUS's Octopus DIY AM4 motherboard. However, it is expected that the processor would provide even better performance on a motherboard built with overclocking in mind.

The motherboard tested has one PCI (Legacy) slot, one PCI-e Gen 3.0 slot, 16 PCI-e Gen 3.0 slots, M.2 slot, two DDR4 DIMM slots and four SATA III 6 GB/s ports. On the other hand, the AMD A12-9800 features eight GPU cores and four CPU cores. The processor has a base clock of 3.8 GHz base clock and it is overclocked at 4.2 GHz with a 27 percent increase in clock speed. Its graphics cores are clocked at 1108 MHz. The processor has a TDP 65W.

Keeping in mind that the motherboard is not especially designed for overclocking, the 4.8 GHz processor speed is a very impressive. The overclock voltage was set to 1.325V. With these settings, the AMD A12-9800 Bristol Ridge managed to get 4608 points in HWBot Prime benchmark.

For those users in need of high performance, the AMD A12-9800 seems a great option to upgrade their setup. This AMD APU comes with clear improvements over the previous generation APUs and CPUs.
