Science Finally Answers Why You Shouldn't Put Potatoes In The Fridge

Mashed, baked or sometimes even roasted. People would usually consider potatoes as comfort food. Potatoes are known to be the number one vegetable crop in the world.  Notably, science has recently debunked some notions about storing this popular vegetable.

Normally, what happens after someone buys a load of vegetables is that in order to keep them fresh for a longer period of time; people would just put them in the fridge. Yes, it might be a clever way and it really makes a lot sense. However, doing so actually makes the vegetables lose some very important aspects.

According to Metro, potatoes that are exposed at a chilly temperature can negatively alter their taste. Without knowing it, a sweeter and tougher taste of is given off as the cold starch in the potato turns into sugar quickly.

But more than just the taste, storing an uncooked potato in a fridge can be dangerous for the health especially when you get to use these potatoes when cooking after the starch from the potato has turned into sugar. This has been outlined by the Food Standard Agency, which stated that potatoes are better off when they are outside the fridge.

Meanwhile, as per the Huffington Post, instead of putting these potatoes in the fridge, storing in a cool but not cold paper bag would be ideal. It has been found that a paper bag can actually work better than plastics because it causes the potato to be exposed to an adequate amount of air which also makes their shelf life longer.

Potatoes are among the best comfort foods on the planet, and learning how to store them properly is advice that nobody can really live without. With this said, make sure these potatoes are away from that dark, cold place.
