Lolong, Largest Croc in Captivity, Dead

The largest crocodile in captivity has died.

Lolong, a 20.24 foot saltwater crocodile was captured in the Philippines in September 2011, and received his Guiness World Records title in July 2012. The massive crocodile spent his days in captivity at the Bunawan Eco-Park and Research Centre in Bunawan township, Philippines.

The cause of the death is unknown, but a post-mortem may reveal answers, reports CNN.

There are suspicions that the 2,370 pound crocodile might have been involved with two lethal attacks on people before his capture, but Lolong was considered a mascot of sorts for crocodile conservation in the Philippines. Environment Secretary Ramon Paje even described him as an "ambassador."
