Nintendo Will Discontinue Production Of Wii U

It is now official that Nintendo has decided to discontinue production of its Wii U mobile gaming console.

Nintendo Wii U Discontinued

The website gamespresso.com reports that up to the last week there had been conflicting rumors about the status of Wii U production. There were some previous rumors stating that the gaming console is being discontinued by the Japanese company, but Nintendo was vaguely saying otherwise.

"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" game title was thought to be releasing on the Nintendo Switch as well as on the Wii U, same way like "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" released on both the Wii and Gamecube. However, with this recent revelation, it seems that we may get "Breath of the Wild" only on the Nintendo Switch.

According to the website bleedingcool.com, it is no surprise that Nintendo has officially acknowledged that the Wii U is ceasing production soon with the Nintendo Switch expected to become the company's next big console. The first reports about Nintendo eventually discontinuing the Wii U started with a note on the company's Japanese site (via Kotaku). Then IGN received a letter from Nintendo suggesting that the same thing is going to happen in North America.

The letter said that as recently posted by the company on its Japanese Wii U website, the production of the mobile gaming console for the Japanese domestic market will end in the near future. The terms of exact timing are yet to be announced. It is also confirmed that all the Wii U devices to be made available for this year in the North American market have already been shipped to all Nintendo retail partners.

Nintendo Wii U Legacy

While the Wii U gaming console wasn't really a commercial success, the gadget is still a really neat one. And what's more important, the Wii U has a handful of truly good game titles. They will certainly keep its name alive in the history of video gaming.

The only Wii U versions left for retail sale in Japan are a 32 GB model bundled with two Splatoon amiibos and a 32 GB model on sale as a single item.
