Telecommunications leading company GOWEX announced that it's offering News Yorkers free Wi-Fi service throughout the city. Access will be available to the general population and tourists within all of the five boroughs.
GOWEX's deployment of 1,953 Wi-Fi smart-zones throughout Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island will provide free internet access via various hotspots. Revenue will come from roaming agreements with AT&T and Deutshe Telekom and advertising that will include the American market and tourists that visit New York City. Additional revenues will come from GOWEX's 'Smart City" services and 'Wireless Smart Cities' (WSC).
"We are talking with various private and public entities that have a high interest in using and expand this project of WSC," said Jenaro Garcia, CEO of GOWEX in a press release.
The Free Wi-Fi GOWEX connection will be accessible through the "FREEWiFiGOWEX" network. Users will be able to download from 3G network through access points from GOWEX at speeds of 1Mb for free users. A free application for iPhone and Android smartphones allows users a faster and easier way to connect. The GOWEX Wi-Fi app is debuting in New York as version 3.0 and features a smart-zone map.
New York was a prime choice for GOWEX to execute its strategic project in, entering the U.S. market for the first time. The company will obtain millions of potential users, the entire New York metropolitan area population of 20 million people and an additional 52 million visitors. This includes the surrounding areas of Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, as people commute frequently into New York City.
Cities throughout the world including Paris, Dublin and Madrid already have wireless privileges provided by GOWEX. Nearly 70 cities around the world feature this service and this year three U.S. cities are expected to receive this service. GOWEX will distribute the 'Smart City' services to various public and private entities.
