Toyota Issues A Recall On 86 To Fix Ignition-Key Problem

A recall from an automaker usually means tens or hundreds of thousands of cars having troubles that need to be fixed. In Toyota's case, there are only less than a hundred units affected. The automaker has recently issued a recall for its 2017 Toyota 86 in order to address a minor problem in the ignition-key.

The Cause Of Recall

As reported by CNET, the problem is due to the connectivity of the automatic transmission key interlock. An improperly connected key interlock allows the driver to remove the keys from the ignition even if the gear has not been placed to park mode. While driving, this is not something to be majorly concerned about but if drivers were to remove their keys without putting the car in the proper gear and exit the vehicle, the car might roll back or forward and lead to parking lot accidents.

The Affected Units

The only units that are affected by this issue are those with traditional keys. The ones with keyless entry and start button have nothing to worry about. According to Auto Evolution, the automaker only issued a recall for 94 units of the 2017 Toyota 86.

What's Next

The owners of the affected units will receive a notification next month via mail. They will have to go to designated dealers that have been instructed to check the units for defect and make the necessary corrections. Customers will not have to worry about paying anything as Toyota announced that the correction will be free of charge.

Not The First Time

Apparently, this is not the first time that an issue like this has occurred. Reports state that the same thing happened just 10 months ago with the Scion FR-S. The only difference is that this time, only 94 units are affected as compared to the previous issue where 26,000 units had to be recalled to fix the issue.
