Gmail Android App Update Adds Direct Reply and Archive Shortcuts To Notifications

Google's updated Gmail Android app has a few new features for users with devices running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or higher. Actions including reply, archive and search can now be done immediately from the notifications bar with one tap.

The new app also speeds up search and offers better search suggestions online and offine, Gmail's official blog announced.

The new features are meant to enhance Gmail's existing notification features such as the customization of which messages users receive notifications for, and sound alerts for individual labels. The latest version of Gmail can be downloaded on Google Play.

The new update comes with new Labels API for third-party developers, according to Phandroid.  

Gmail users are beaming about the new update in reviews. One reviewer said, "finally a feature I have been waiting for! Deleting emails from the notifications bar!" However, several reviewers wanted to see the delete feature implemented alongside reply, archive and search within notifications. 

In related news out of Google, rumor is spreading that Google Babble would consolidate the company's chat services. Google Talk is currently built in with Gmail and Google+. Google Babble would include Google's Voice, Hangout and Drive chats under one protocol.
