Tesla To Announce Supercharger Network On Thursday?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted Monday promising a big announcement on Thursday, but offered few details other than to say, "am going to put my money where my mouth is in a v major way."

The place and time for the scheduled event are still to be determined, a Tesla spokeswoman told CNET, adding it would not be at the New York Auto Show, which is holding a press preview on Wednesday and Thursday. Tesla shares jumped 4.23 percent after Musk's tweet, CNET reported.

Musk's tweet could suggest he is referring to Tesla's Supercharger network. He first discussed fast chargers for the Tesla Model S at the Geneva auto show earlier this month. It is likely that Thursday's announcement would be related to the Supercharger network, CNET reports.

The chargers would be free for Tesla owners to use for life and he added that the solar cells installed at the Superchargers would make it so Tesla would not have to buy electricity from a utility.

Tesla's Model S has reached full production from its Fremont, Calif., manufacturing plant, but Tesla's year-end shareholder statement said that the Model X, its next vehicle, would be delayed by one year. The car was announced in February 2012, and Tesla promised that production would begin in late 2013. The company has pushed that date back, and now won't begin building the new car until late 2014.

The Model X is similar to the Model S sedan, built on a slightly larger version of the S's frame. The crossover will be offered in both a base model, rear-wheel drive and an all-wheel drive variant, which will feature an additional electric motor up front.

Tesla plans to introduce an affordable electric car to its line-up but that is unlikely to occur Thursday.
