The Most Controversial Moments Of Marissa Mayer At Yahoo: Strictness, Sexism And Negligence

Marissa Mayer´s reign in Yahoo is done since she explained that she would resign from the company that saw her becoming a true leader in Silicon Valley, and fell into disgrace because of the hacking situation. Given this situation, here are the most controversial moments in Marissa Mayer´s period in the tech giant.

She Was Accused Of Wanting To Get Rid Of Male Employees

This was probably the latest controversy regarding Marissa Mayer and her job in Yahoo, and one of the weirdest tech moments of 2016. Believe it or not, she was sued for allegedly trying to get rid of male employees, through a secret campaign in which the main goal was to have a vast majority of female workers.

The lawsuit was made in San Jose District Court by Scott Ard, who has a media executive for Yahoo for about three and half years until he was fired in 2015, apparently because Marissa Mayer encouraged and fostered the use of some kind of performance-rating system to accommodate personal opinions and management´s subjective biases to the detriment of male workers.

Apparently, this situation started in August 2012 shortly after Marissa Mayer became president and CEO of Yahoo, and since that moment there was an important difference between male and female workers according to the lawsuit. Although nothing happened, this was something that didn't reflect Marissa Mayer´s image as Yahoo's boss.

Marissa Mayer Accidentally Fired 30 Employees

If the later moment was weird this was extremely bizarre, given the fact that firing a lot of employees just because a minor mistake is not something that usually happens in major companies as Yahoo. Nevertheless, this is something that actually happened under Marissa Mayer´s period, which unfortunately make her look not exactly as a great CEO.

Apparently, what happened was that 30 workers were said to have been let go in conversations with their respective supervisors, being told later that they were just on a shortlist. In short, the thing was that the employees on firing lists who are just people that wasn't doing a great job but weren't meant to be fired, even if their performance scale wasn't high enough. However, no one told the managers about this and they eventually got terminated.

Naturally, the image of Marissa Mayer and the rest of Yahoo´s leaders were severely damaged to the workers because of this episode, given the fact that in addition to the mistake, a month before she made a joke telling that no one would get fired...that week.

Marissa Mayer Prohibit Working From Home

If there´s something that has always been said of Marissa Mayer is that she´s extremely cold, analytic, calculator and strict, which could be the key of her success as a leader in the tech world. Nevertheless, this last characteristic made her going through one of her most controversial moments at Yahoo, because of a decision that never seemed rational or even practical.

Believe it or not, in a moment in which working at home has proved to be extremely easy and quite effective to a company, Marissa Mayer prohibit this kind of activity, explaining that in order to turn Yahoo in the best place to work, the employees need to work side-by-side in the office, since some of the best decisions and ideas usually appears in the working place.

Also, she told that working remotely is not exactly efficient since this is something that usually sacrifices speed and quality. Although what happened with Yahoo is not Marissa Mayer´s complete fault, there were some controversial moments in which she was definitely the one to blame.
