Samsung Galaxy S3: No Key Lime Pie For U.S. Version, To Stop At Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean?

Google is widely expected to announce the much-awaited next version of Android, dubbed Key Lime Pie, at its Google I/O event in May.

A slew of Android-powered smartphones, including the just-announced Galaxy S4 from Samsung are slated to get update to Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. However, reports have also hinted that Samsung will not update several devices in its portfolio to Key Lime Pie and these will only get Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which will be the last firmware for them.

The devices in question include the Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3 Mini and Galaxy Note smartphones, which are two years old. It has been suggested that Samsung is looking at discontinuing these devices.

A recent SamMobile report suggests that Samsung devices running dual-core CPUs will have to contend with upgrades to maximum Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

"The insider reconfirmed. All smartphones and tablets based on a dual-core processor will end on Android 4.2.2," reported SamMobile.

Does this imply that Android 5.0 will only support Samsung devices that have quad-core processors?

If the idea that Android 5.0 will only support Samsung devices with quad-core processors comes to pass, then it means that some Samsung flagship devices will also have to call it a day with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Previously, SamMobile disclosed that the Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) and the Galaxy S3 LTE (GT-I9305) will be updated to Android 5.0. However, the Galaxy S3's international version comes with a quad-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, but the U.S. version has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. This means that the U.S. version of the Galaxy S3 will stop at Android 4.2.2.

If this happens, then Galaxy S3 users in the U.S. will no doubt feel cheated.
