Elephant Bird: Scrambled Eggs Anyone?

A fossilized elephant bird egg will be placed on auction by Christie's on Wednesday, April 24. Also known as the world's largest, the elephant bird egg auction will take place through the auction house in London.

Our question now is: despite the fact that to find an elephant bird egg is "very difficult," with only pieces of such eggs being discovered sometimes in southern Madagascar, what would it mean to go for some elephant bird scrambled eggs?

Gizmodo has already cracked (pun excused) that an elephant bird egg omelet would cost you up to $49,000. This is based on the elephant bird egg price estimation by Christie's ranging from $33,000 to $49,000.

"Although, while it would undoubtedly pass the floating egg test, being fossilized and all, it still wouldn't be wise," Gizmodo quips, still seeming to prefer the omelet over, say, other variations such as scrambled eggs.

As the elephant bird went extinct as late as the 18th century, it's probably a good assumption that its fossilized egg — pricey or not, humongous or not — wouldn't be the tastiest of treats for an Easter Sunday breakfast chock full of scrambled eggs or any other kind.

Although Healthy Eating, Naturally suggests omelets over scrambled eggs, the site does make the radical suggestion of going with a scrambled omelet.

Veggies, too, can be added to an omelet or scrambled eggs, the site reminds us, so we can only imagine what it would be like to find some remnant of an 18th century carrot to mix in with our elephant bird egg meal.

Whoever ends up buying the elephant bird egg will clearly have his or her choice of whether to cook it up as an omelet or as scrambled eggs. Perhaps the buyer may even keep the elephant bird egg around a little longer just for posterity's sake. After all, spending the money one could use to purchase a luxury car on scrambled eggs or an omelet breakfast sounds pretty bird-brained to us.
