Tom Hanks' Short Story Obsession Created 'Uncommon Type'

Uncommon Type: Some Stories will be published in hard-bound-print, eBook, and also in audio formats, with Tom Hanks' voice reading it. This was his output during his vacant time or even during film shoot.

Uncommon Type Has 17 Kinds Of Stories

Uncommon Type features 17 different kinds of stories, each in some way relating a different typewriter (Hanks is an avid reader of these vintage typewriters and owns over a hundred of them). In the book, there is a story about a refugee that arrives in New York City after the country's civil war. His life and family have been torn apart, another about a man who puts a perfect game (and then another, and another) becoming ESPN's latest celebrity; another story is about a peculiar billionaire and his faithful executive assistant on a quest for something larger in America; and another about the spree life of an actor.

"I read a story by Tom in The New Yorker several years ago," said Sonny Mehta, chairman, and editor-in-chief of Alfred A. Knopf., "and I was a crash into both his remarkable voice and command as a writer. I had hoped there might be more stories in the coming years. Joyfully, for readers, it turns out there were."

Tom Hanks' Passion And Film Doesn't Have Any Conflict At All

Tom Hanks began his writing career as a collaborator in the book in 2015. "In the two years of putting-into-pieces on the stories," said Hanks, "I made movies in New York, Berlin, Budapest, and Atlanta and wrote in all of them. I wrote in guesthouses during press tours. I wrote on a trip. I wrote on planes, at home, and even in the office. When I could make a timetable, and keep to it, I wrote in the mornings from 9 till 1."

William Heinemann, an imprint of Cornerstone (part of The Random House Group Ltd, a Penguin Random House Company) has learned the UK and Commonwealth Rights (ex. Canada) for Uncommon Type: Some Stories.
