An Indian Company Wants To Replace Laptops With Smart Glasses — Is It Possible?

Have you ever wondered if there will be smart glasses that could replace laptops one day?

According to one Indian company, there will be, and it's coming in 2023.

Nimo Planets, the company in question, is developing smart glasses designed to replace laptops in the future thanks to its processor, which turns the smart glasses into a mini-computer that sits on your head.

Nimo Specifications and Details

According to WIRED, these smart glasses, called Nimo, are powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR1 processor. It also has Bluetooth capability for users to connect a Bluetooth-capable mouse and keyboard to use for work.

The beta version of the smart glasses weighs around 120 grams, while Nimp Planet expects the final product to weigh in at approximately 90 grams. It currently comes in two sizes with adjustable hinges, which would help the smart glasses to fit multiple head sizes comfortably, per Nimo's FAQ page.

The Nimo smart glasses can run for three hours straight and charge in its case. Users can also plug in the smart glasses with the case to extend its battery life by six or seven hours with a USB-type C cable.

Its displays (the lens), provide users with the virtual equivalent of a 45- to 50-inch screen that gives a 720p display output.

However, the smart glasses' capabilities are vastly limited due to them being intended for word processing and project management. This limitation means it won't run creative software like Adobe Photoshop. Although it doesn't have a camera to take pictures with, a set of speakers, and augmented reality mechanics, you can connect Bluetooth devices to the smart glasses for it to produce audio output and pictures.

The smart glasses have six virtual screens that will help users type away and simplify the way they manage their productivity apps. These screens can be switched at will with a right-click or a turn of the head at any moment while the smart glasses are in use.

"We want to make the hardware as simple as possible and make sure the multiscreen productivity works great, said Rohildev Nattukallingal, Nimo Planet's founder and CEO. "Everything else is secondary to us."

Nattukallingal also added that the company's approach with its smart glasses is more about how the company can help someone work anywhere without compromising productivity.

Currently, the beta version of the smart glasses can support thousands of productivity apps designed for Android and Web operating systems (OS).

Nattukallingal mentioned that the OS the smart glasses is using is a forked version of Android, meaning that it does not have the certification needed to run the Google Play Store.

Pricing and Availability

Interested customers can head over to Nimo's official page to grab a reservation spot for $799, including taxes. However, the smart glasses will only be available in select cities in India and the US come the first half of 2023.

There are more than 2,000 people on Nimo's waiting list, and the company might launch a crowdfunding campaign once the smart glasses' final design is complete and is ready to manufacture.
