Google Docs To Get Emoji Reactions Support

You can react to Facebook posts and Instagram messages, and you'll soon be able to react to Google Docs content as well.

Emoji reactions are coming to Google Docs, allowing you to respond to text with a simple symbol rather than a comprehensive comment.

Google claims that the feature supports all of the emojis available in the newest edition, including gender-neutral alternatives and sillier symbols like melting face and biting lip.

Emoji Reactions Come to Google Docs

Emoji reactions have become a typical feature of modern software and social interactions. They can be found on a variety of social media platforms such as Facebook, as well as messaging apps like iMessage and Facebook Messenger.

Google announced on Tuesday, April 5, that users of Google Docs will be able to incorporate emoji reactions into their documents, allowing you to respond to text with a simple symbol rather than a comprehensive comment.

"This feature will be ON by default and can not be disabled by the user," Google said.

While you can already put emojis into the text of a document or a comment, the latest update will allow you to react to highlighted text straight in the browser using Google's sidebar.

According to Google, the emoji set, which is updated to the latest version (Emoji 14.0), would include gender-neutral options for gender-modifiable emojis. Emoji skin tone and gender preferences are also stored for each individual emoji.

Emoji reactions for rapid release domains have already begun to roll out. Beginning on April 20, they will be gradually distributed on scheduled release domains.

The emoji reactions will be available to Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus users, but not to those on the most basic tiers like Enterprise Essentials, per The Verge.

As reported by Gizmodo, markdown support (for formatting choices), the option to launch a Google Meet video chat in Docs, pageless view, and assisted writing recommendations are among the new emoji features for Google Workspace and Google Docs.

How To Use the New Feature?

When you highlight content, the emoji reaction function will display as a third option alongside "Add Comment" and "Suggest Edits," according to a GIF shared by Google. You may also use your keyboard to search the emoji database.

Here's a walkthrough on how to use the new function step by step:

  1. To begin, open Google Docs on your computer.
  2. After that, you should highlight the text or phrase that you want to react to.
  3. Then, you can either go to insert and click emoji reaction or click Add emoji reaction on the right-side of the screen.
  4. Finally, you can now select the emoji you want to use to express your thoughts.

While Google stated that this feature will gradually roll starting April 20, it also stated that all users will have access to it eventually.
