Snapchat's 'Pixy' Is a $230 Drone Designed To Level Up Your Selfie Game

Do you remember when Snap was said to be working on new selfie drones? If not, you're in for a surprise.

The company actually developed and made one, which gives you a lot of options on how you take selfies and videos while taking them to the next level. In the strictest sense of the word, taking your selfie with Pixy is not even a selfie anymore. It's a Pixy-ie!

Snap recently revealed that its pocket-sized, free-flying friendly selfie drone, Pixy, is now available for purchase from its official website so people can "share [their] perspectives."

The unmanned aerial vehicle comes with a price tag of $249.99 and is available in the U.S. and France.

Snap Pixy Selfie Drone: How To Use?

According to Snap's announcement and the Pixy official website, the selfie drone flies without the need for controls or any setup.

To use Pixy, all you need to do is hold the selfie drone at eye level, which is its signal to take off, according to Tom's Guide. Should you want it to end its flight, hold out your palm the same way you did when you wanted it to take off. The drone will gently return to your hand when you do so thanks to a bottom-facing camera.

Pixy has several flight patterns to choose from, such as hover, orbit, reveal, favorite, and follow, according to CNET. Choosing "follow" will have Pixy follow you around as it flies near you.

Additionally, videos recorded while the selfie drone is in-flight are wirelessly transferred and saved into Snapchat Memories, where you can use Snapchat's editing tools, Lenses, and Sounds to customize them. From there, you can crop your recording into portraits and apply Smart Edits like Hyperspeed, Bounce, Orbit 3D, and Jump Cut. Afterward, you can share the result to Chat, Stories, Spotlight, or any other platform.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel sees the Pixy as "a new way of capturing moments centered on people," saying that it is a more narrow view than how drones have traditionally positioned.

"I think Pixy opens up a whole new space here because your smartphone can't fly," Spiegel said. "You can get a totally new and different perspective. And so in that way, I think Pixy is meaningfully better than what your smartphone can create."

Additional Features: Pixy Flight Pack

Snap's Pixy always comes in a flight pack, which costs $249.99. This flight pack consists of the Pixy selfie drone, a USB3.0 charging cable, a rechargeable battery, a dual battery charger, and a bumper and carrying strap.

The Pixy's rechargeable battery can be used for five to eight flights when the default flight modes are used, with the flight pack having two.

You can also have a Pixy flight pack that comes with the bumper and carrying strap, rechargeable battery, and USB-C charging cable for a much cheaper $229.99.

Buying a Pixy battery separate from the flight pack retails at $19.99 while getting a separate dual battery charger costs $49.99.

Pixy's official website says that the selfie drone is available in the US and France, but it seems that the device only has a limited stock as the website says "while supplies last."
