What Does Google Nest Camera and Amazon Alexa Integration Mean for Smart Home Users?

The integration of Google Nest Camera and Amazon Alexa means you can now stream live feeds from Nest cameras, doorbells, and other devices to anything from your Amazon Fire TV to any Echo device, as per Engadget's report.

Furthermore, according to Engadget, Amazon made a similar gesture to open up its own smart home ecosystem last month. Amazon announced that its doorbells and security cameras would work with Google Nest, Ring, Abode, and other third-party devices.

Following Amazon's announcement, Google Nest has updated its languishing Alexa skill to include its latest cameras, according to The Verge.

In addition to the new Google Nest Alexa skill, the integration will give the devices the ability to view a live feed and get motion announcements on Echo speakers from the Google Nest Cam (outdoor/indoor, battery), Google Nest Cam (wired, indoor), and Nest Cam with floodlight.

Doorbell press notifications and two-way talk to Google's support for the Nest Doorbell (battery) are also added.

You can also get doorbell press notifications in addition to two-way talk on the Nest Doorbell. This would let you use an Echo Show like an intercom for your doorbell.

Among Alexa's voice commands for the new skill are "Alexa, show the [camera name] feed" and "Alexa, answer the front door."

The skill also incorporates the previous skills from Google Nest that allowed Nest Thermostat users to control their thermostat (all models) and older Nest cameras, according to The Verge.

However, you have to migrate your Nest account to a Google Account if you do have older Nest devices.

Integration of Devices by Different Manufacturers Beneficial to Smart Home Users

The move of Google to integrate Nest Camera with Alexa follows Amazon's decision made last month, which is to open up its smart home feature set to Nest, Adobe and other devices.

According to CNET, it falls in line with an alliance Apple, Google, Amazon and other tech companies made last year. They want to certify new smart home devices under a network standard called Matter.

Google said in a blog post: "We're always looking for ways to create a more helpful home, and today we have an update for those who have a "blended" smart home. We're happy to share that starting today we're introducing a Google Nest skill for Amazon Alexa to work with our newest cameras and doorbell that launched in 2021"

To install the new skill, you can head over to Amazon. You then need to open up the Google Home app settings and click on Partner Connections, then Amazon Alexa upon installation. The app will then guide you on how to add integrations for each device.
