Starlink Can Now Be Portable — But How Much Will It Cost You?

A number of Starlink users can now take their satellite internet with them thanks to a new "portability" feature.

For $25, You Can "Temporarily" Move Your Service to Different Locations

According to TechCrunch, Starlink customers can "temporarily" migrate their service to any location within the same continent as their permanent service address that is currently supported by the company's satellite availability. Users in the U.S. will have to pay an extra $25 per month for the add-on.

The $25 fee means Starlink's total price will rise even more, which may be a tough pill to swallow for some after monthly prices jumped to $110 in March. Overall, you'll pay $135 per month for Starlink's regular service, plus the ability to hop in the RV and set up high-speed internet wherever you fall inside Starlink's coverage zones and have a pretty clear view of the sky.

As per the news story of TechCrunch, to take advantage of this new service, you'll need to relocate your connectivity hardware and mount your Starlink dish with a clear line to the sky free of any tree cover.

Restrictions of the Portable Service

According to Techradar , citing the official support page, there are several limitations to this new service, which we compiled below:

1) Starlink said that a good connection is not assured. They clarify that while the company gives priority to the registered service address, moving anywhere else will disrupt the connection to some extent, particularly during peak usage or network congestion.

2) The connection cannot be moved to another continent, but it can be moved to another country.

 a) If you bring your Starlink connection into your travels, you can only stay in another country for two months.

 b) Techradar noted that the same is true if you stay within a single country yet are away from home for an extended period of time. The time span for this scenario, however, is fairly vague. Starlink says you'll be required to change addresses if you're away from your registered address for too long, but no time range is specified.

3) You also cannot use Starlink while moving because it will not work and will void your warranty.

4) As previously mentioned, you must mount your Starlink dish with a clear line to the sky free of any tree cover to enjoy this service.

What Is the Feedback to the New Portable Service of Starlink?

The service provided by Starlink is improving over time. Starlink was the fastest internet satellite provider for Q4 2021, according to a new internet speed study by Ookla. Their service has a download speed of 104.97 Mbps on average. Viasat came in second with an average of 21.81 Mbps.

And Starlink's new portability option looks to be promising as well as it operates pretty successfully for other users. On his Twitter account, YouTuber Dave Lee shared a photo of his StarLink connection while camping. He had a download speed of 145 Mbps.
