Lime, a mobility startup, is looking to expand its fleet of electric motorcycles and scooters.
Electric Motorbikes Will Be Tested in California
According to the company's blog on June 13, the company launched a pilot program for their electric motorcycle, dubbed the Citra, in Long Beach, California. Lime spokesperson Russell Murphy told The Verge that the company expects to release several hundred Citra bikes in the California city this summer, with the number of bikes potentially increasing to 500 if demand is high enough.
In light of this summer's record-high gas prices, Lime is hoping that customers would seek out alternative modes of transportation like the Citra.
"Citra is the perfect way to save money on gas, avoid time wasted in traffic, and alleviate the headaches of hunting for parking this summer and we're excited about its potential," said Lime president Joe Kraus.
Citra Features
The Citra is a completely motorized scooter that combines the sitting comfort of a bike with the convenience of an e-scooter.
Citra has a throttle on the handlebars that eliminates the need to pedal and allows you to arrive sweat-free at your destination. It's also the first vehicle Lime has designed with specific storage. When transporting groceries, bags, or other objects, the rear compartment can be sealed for even more ease.

Riders can use front and rear turn signals to let other drivers know they're turning and make their movement more predictable.

Instead of a bell, a louder horn is used so that other road users may hear riders approaching.

For a smoother ride, thicker tires are designed to better manage road bumps.

A phone mount makes navigation easier by eliminating the need for passengers to stop and consult their phones for directions.

Citra, like every new Lime vehicle, is powered by "swappable batteries and repaired with reusable parts." These contribute to its longevity while lowering carbon emissions.

Citra has storage options to assist riders with errands, including a rear sealable compartment and a step through frame that can accommodate backpacks or groceries.

Citra's built-in utility, comfy seat, and smooth power are all geared for longer trips, providing riders with a wonderful experience.
Challenges of Mobility Startups
Engadget reported that due to opposition from local legislatures, safety issues, and a drop in ridership during the pandemic, mobility firms have struggled to thrive. On the other hand, The Verge noted that Lime had recently ended its shared moped program in New York City and Washington, DC, which had been in operation since January 2021.
To stay viable, several mobility companies have had to lay off employees or shut down operations. Lime laid off a tiny portion of its workers and left Atlanta, Phoenix, San Diego, San Antonio, and eight other cities outside the U.S. in 2020.
