Twitter is Testing a Co-Author Feature for Tweets

Soon enough, you'll be able to tweet with a partner.

Twitter is exploring the possibility of a new feature called "CoTweet." This new feature will allow two accounts to co-author a tweet.

Once you co-author a tweet, you and the other person will both be tagged in a single tweet.

According to the social media company, they are now testing it with select accounts in the United States, Canada and Korea.

The company started testing the new feature earlier this year. It was first spotted by reverse engineer and developer Alessandro Paluzzi.

How Does CoTweet Work?

According to The Verge, "a CoTweet is a co-authored Tweet that's posted simultaneously to both authors' profiles and their followers' timelines."

The CoTweet can be easily recognized as the two authors' profile pictures and usernames appear in the header.

With CoTweet, both authors will share the spotlight. It will also unlock opportunities to engage new audiences. Moreover, the new feature will enhance both authors' established partnerships.

"CoTweets help authors share the spotlight, unlock opportunities for engaging new audiences, and enhance their established partnerships," Twitter explains on its website.

To start sending a CoTweet, both authors must finalize the content that they'd like to share. To do this, both of you can use Direct Messages to collaborate.

Once the content that you want to tweet is ready, you can start creating the CoTweet and initiates an invite to your co-author.

To start the process, open the Tweet composer and add the co-authored messaging, then, simply tap the CoTweet icon. From your follower's list, select a co-author and tap Send invite.

Your co-author needs to accept the CoTweet invitation in order for the CoTweet to post on both of your profiles and on both of your followers' timelines.

Twitter Explore New Means of Collaboration in the Platform

Twitter spokesperson, Joseph J. Nuñez, said that the company is exploring various means for people to collaborate in the platform. They would like to see how the platforms' users will utilize the new feature to widen their community and to reach new audience.

"We're continuing to explore new ways for people to collaborate on Twitter. We're testing CoTweets for a limited time to learn how people and brands may use this feature to grow and reach new audiences, and strengthen their collaborations with other accounts." Nuñez explained to The Verge.

Presently, several Twitter users have been already testing the CoTweets feature. Some users shared their experiences, saying that the new feature "allows a main tweet author to invite someone else to be tagged in the tweet and discuss the contents over DM."

Users who used CoTweet shared that the second account needs to approve the co-authored tweet.  It resulted to a tweet that is co-authored by two people. However, it appears like replies are directed toward the main author of the tweet only.

According to Engadget, CoTweet is like the feature introduced by Instagram last year, which seem to target brands and creators than the typical Twitter users.

For now, Twitter has started the test and it is currently a "temporary experiment." The company, however, but didn't indicate when it would be available more widely.
