Meta to Hike Quest 2 Price From $299 to $400 — When Will It be Implemented?

If you're planning to get a Meta Quest 2, be ready with an extra $100.

Mark Zuckerberg owned company, Meta, made an announcement today that it is increasing the price of Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headsets following an increase in production costs, as per Tech Crunch.

Beginning August 1, the 128GB version will be $399.99, which is $100 higher than the current price of $299.99. Meanwhile, the 256GB version will now be $499.99 from the current price of $399.99.

Moreover, Meta is also raising the price for Quest's accessories and refurbished units.

Price Hike of Quest 2 Will Help Meta Grows its Investment in VR Products

"People have spent over $1 billion on Meta Quest apps, helping to fuel developers' businesses as they deliver the games and experiences that make VR great," Meta said in a blog post.

The company noted that that the costs to make and ship their products have increased. Thus, adjusting the price of Quest 2 is necessary to grow their investment in the research and development of VR products.

To soften the blow of the price hike, when you purchase a new headset you can download the popular VR rhythm game Beat Saber for free, according to Engadget.

With this, Meta explained that you will be able to download Beat Saber for free if you buy a Quest 2 between August 1st and December 31st and if you activate the device before January 31st of next year.

Moreover, you must also use an account that does not already have Beat Saber enabled. You can download Beat Saber for free for 14 days following activation.

New High-end VR Headset to Arrive Later This Year

According to Meta, the company has an "ambitious" VR hardware roadmap that it follows. One of its ambitious project is the high-end Project Cambria headset, which will be launched later this year. The headset is rumored to be called Quest Pro.

For such a long time, Meta has teased a "high-end" VR headset to complement Quest 2. In a demo video, Zuckerberg recently showcased the device's mixed-reality capabilities.

While Quest 2 offers a greyscale passthrough cameras, Quest Pro will have full-color, more realistic passthrough capability. In addition, it will have depth sensors that will accurately place digital objects into physical space

According to Tech Crunch, Bloomberg reported that Quest Pro will cost more than $1,000. There are even some leaks suggesting that it will be around $1,500.

It is believed that by raising the price of the Quest 2, Meta is trying to lessen the price gap between the Quest 2 and Quest Pro, as per Tech Crunch.

It can be observed, however, that Meta's venture into virtual reality hasn't been profitable. Meta's Reality Labs lost about $3 billion in the first quarter of 2022, while $10  billion was lost by the division last year.

Despite of the losses, the company is planning to release new generations of the Meta Quest. Since its rebranding to Meta last year, Quest Pro is the company's first new piece of VR hardware.
