How to Fix Ghost Touch on iPhone, Android

When your iPhone or Android device does not usually respond to a touch command you just pressed or when a certain display section of your device is unresponsive, chances are you have a touch glitch, commonly known as a ghost touch problem.

Although the behavior of the 'ghost' pushes differs from device to device, this phenomenon appears to be more prevalent on certain devices than on others.

According to Nextpit, the older Motorola Moto G4 Plus, several models of the Apple iPhone (including the iPhone X, iPhone 11, and the iPhone 12 series), and some older OnePlus devices are examples of some of the electronic gadgets that have been identified as having the potential to experience problems with ghost touches.

You won't be able to fix the issue without some trial and error, as there is no single cause that can be pinpointed as the cause of the problem, nor is there a single solution to the problem.

However, here are a few things you can try to resolve the ghost touch on your device, as recommended by MUO.

How to Fix Ghost Touch

  • Restart Your Device

To fix ghost touch, users can first try restarting their devices when they encounter the problem repeatedly.

It is possible that clearing your iPhone's temporary memory by restarting it could fix any glitch that is causing the screen to function normally.

To force restart an iPhone that only has a Home button:

  1. Keep holding down the top (or side) button until the slider to turn the power off displays.

  2. Drag the power off slider to its rightmost position.

  3. After the device has been powered down, continue to press and hold the top (or side) button until the Apple logo appears.

And here are the steps to restart an iPhone without a home button:

  1. Keep holding the side button as well as any of the volume buttons until you see the slider to turn the power off.

  2. Drag the power off slider to its right side position.

  3. Once the computer has been powered off, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

  • Reinstall iOS Using Recovery Mode

If restarting your device did not work, you can opt to reinstall your iOS using the Recovery Mode and reinstalling iOS.

Connect an iPhone to a computer running macOS or iTunes, force the restart of the iPhone using the instructions above, and the iPhone will enter Recovery Mode.

Your computer will display a notification after you are in recovery mode that reads, "There is a problem with the iPhone that requires it to be updated or restored." If there is an update available, you can select it, or if there is none, click Restore.

  • Perform a Factory Reset

If restarts and software updates don't stop your iPhone's ghost touch problem, you could try to perform a factory reset. This is a good way of removing any underlying software issues that might cause ghost touch.

To perform a factory reset,

  1. Launch Settings

  2. Select General

  3. Open Settings.

  4. Select General.

  5. Scroll down through the options, and click Transfer or Reset

  6. Click Erase All Content and Settings

  7. Select Continue and type in your iPhone passcode

You will need to go through the setup procedure once again after you have conducted the factory reset on the device. In the display, you will have the option to restore your iPhone using a backup that was created in the past.

  • Updating the Operating System

The operating system of your phone might be brought up to date as an additional solution to the problem of ghost touches.

This is something that should be done because it is possible that ghost touch was brought on by a software bug that Apple corrected in a recent update.

To bring your iOS up to date,

  1. Launch Settings.

  2. Choose the General option.

  3. Click the Software Update button.

  4. Click the Download and Install button.

  • Screen Protector

In some cases, other users have encountered numerous ghost touch problems due to a defect in their screen protectors.

Protectors for screens can interfere with the functionality of touch screens. Screen protectors are extremely thin layers of either glass or plastic that can be adhered to the touch screen of an iPhone in order to shield it from damage such as cracking or scratches.

When removing the screen protector from your iPhone, you should do so extremely cautiously and slowly. When removing the screen protector from the iPhone's display, begin at one of the corners and work your way around the device. Cleaning it or removing buried particles might easily solve the problem.
