'Goodnight Mommy' Trailer Hints at a Terrifying Film

"Goodnight Mommy" narrates the story of two brothers, Elias and Lucas, played by real-life twins Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, as per Variety.

The brothers are sent to stay with their mother at her remote country home. However, upon meeting their mother, they are greeted by a woman with surgical bandages on her face. Their mother claims that she had just undergone some cosmetic work.

While the reason for having surgical bandages is not too suspicious, there are some behaviors that put the boys on edge. For instance, their mother suddenly becomes a smoker. Then, she surprisingly has new draconian house rules.

The person who is supposed to be their mother also appears to be indifferent to them. This is far from what she was before. All of these little things that Elias and Lucas observed made them conclude that they with an imposter.

While the trailer doesn't show the boys' mother's face without the bandages, it does seem to support that their suspicions are correct.

Upon realizing that her sons doubt her identity, "mother" brutally punishes them until the boys acknowledge her as their mother.

Matt Sobel Directs 'Goodnight Mommy'

"Goodnight Mommy" is a remake of the 2014 Austrian film of the same title.

The original 2014 film was written and directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. It followed the same plot. The original film was an Austrian entry for best foreign language film at the 88th Academy Awards. However, it failed to be nominated.

This is not the first time that Watts took a role in a remake of a foreign horror film. She previously starred in 2002's "The Ring," an adaption of Japanese filmmaker Hideo Nakata's 1998 film having the same title.

The screenplay of "Goodnight Mommy" is from Kyle Warren, who worked previously with the "Lethal Weapon" television series and "The Mysteries of Laura."

The film was produced by Amazon Studios together with Animal Kingdom and Playtime. It was produced by David Kaplan, Joshua Astrachan, Valery Guibal, and Nicolas Brigaud-Robert.

Matt Sobel is the director of the American remake of "Goodnight Mommy." His recent feature includes "Take Me to the River" in 2015.

"Take Me to the River" follows a story of a teenager, played by Logan Miller. He planned to come out at his family reunion. However, a bloodstain on his young cousin's dress disrupted the event, eventually making him a suspect of abuse.
