When you think of the greatest American sitcoms in history, one of the shows that will probably come to mind is "Friends." It ran for 10 seasons and, needless to say, it became very successful and its popularity endures up to this day. 

Today, September 22, we look back at the one that started it all. It is none other than the first episode ever of "Friends," which aired on NBC on this day in 1994 on NBC.

Before we talk about the day that the hit sitcom finally aired on TV, let's first talk about what the show is all about. 

"Friends," as previously mentioned is an American sitcom that aired on NBC. It was created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman. The sitcom made its debut on September 22, 1994, and ended on May 6, 2004. 

The story of "Friends" follows the lives of a group of six friends who live in Manhattan, New York. They are: 

  • Chandler Bing (played by Matthew Perry)
  • Joey Tribbiani (played by Matt LeBlanc)
  • Monica Geller (played by Courteney Cox)
  • Phoebe Buffay (played by Lisa Kudrow)
  • Rachel Green (played by Jennifer Aniston)
  • Ross Geller (played by David Schwimmer)

The Pilot Episode of "Friends"

If you and some other person happen to know the pilot episode of "Friends" by different titles, do not waste time and effort by getting into an argument about who is right and who is wrong. This is because the first episode of the sitcom has more than one name. 

Like many other TV series, one of the titles that the first episode of season one goes by is simply "Pilot." Some simply refer to it is as "The First One." The other titles, however, follow the format that became pretty much associated with "Friends" throughout its lifetime and beyond. 

The first episode is also known to many fans as "The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate" or "The One Where It All Began."
