[RUMOR] 2 Million PSVR 2 Units Could Be Ready for Sale at Launch Date, Source Says

PlayStation 2 VR (PSVR 2) units might be easier to get on launch day if the rumors about Sony are correct.

Sony is allegedly planning on making two million PSVR 2 units by March 2023, possibly to complement its decision to increase its production of PlayStation 5 (PS5) units within the next six months.

Sony was reported to be ramping up production of PS5 units in 2022 to make the popular video game console available for everyone who wants one, per GamesIndustry.biz

PlayStation VR 2 Increased Production Plan Details

Sony is reportedly planning on increasing its production of PSVR 2 headsets in 2022 to make two million units between Sept. 2022 and March 2023, per Bloomberg

According to the publication's sources, who are familiar with Sony's plans, the company had already started mass production of PSVR 2 units sometime in September as it wants to set an "ambitious outlook that defies the global economic malaise."

The sources also added that Sony is allegedly optimistic with its PSVR 2 production as it has yet to run into supply chain constraints. However, they mentioned that the VR headset's production figure might change depending on its sales momentum once it launches early next year.

To date, there is still no definite release date for the PSVR 2 headset, but the information Bloomberg's sources provided hints that Sony will release the headset sometime in March 2023.

If true, this release is in line with the company's announcement on its official PlayStation Instagram page that it would be releasing the PSVR 2 sometime in early 2023.

This alleged production increase will coincide with Sony's plan to increase PS5 production to make the popular video game console more accessible to anyone who wants one.

Veronica Rogers, SVP, Head of Global Sales and Business Operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment, mentioned in June that Sony has sold more than 20 million PS5 units globally. She also added that the company is planning on increasing its production of PS5s in 2022 to make them more available for everyone who wants one in 2023.

This increase is important as PSVR 2 headset may not be compatible with PCs at launch, and could only work when connected to a PS5, per PCGamesN and GamePur

What To Look Forward On PSVR 2

PlayStation gamers interested in getting a PSVR 2 unit can look forward to experiencing 4K resolution with a 90 to 120Hz refresh rate and a 110-degree field of view.

The headset will reportedly utilize foveated rendering, which will make processing easier for the PS5. It will also come equipped with a "see-through mode" to prevent players from wandering too far off and stumbling onto items.

To make the PSVR 2 easier to use, it will no longer use a camera to track a user's movement. Instead, it will utilize inside-out tracking through the cameras within the headset itself.

The headset's controllers also feature the same haptic feedback that the PS5's DualSense controller has. It will also have finger-touch detection, which determines which fingers are which without pressing any buttons.

However, the VR headset could cost as much as a PS5, according to Tokyo-based analyst Serkan Toto of Kantan games, who explained that the PSVR 2's features could drive its price tag up.
