MediaTek’s Dimensity 1080 to Bring Upgraded Camera Support to Midrange Phones

MediaTek has finally unveiled the Dimensity 1080, the brand's successor to Dimensity 920 chipset, which is known to power midrange smartphones, as per Digital Trends.

The Dimensity 920 chipset has been used to power midrange phones such as Xiaomi Mi 11i, the Realme 9 Pro Plus, and the Realme Narzo 50 Pro.

Now, its successor, the MediaTek system on a chip (SoC) Dimensity 1080, will power the next generation of midrange smartphones.

Dimensity 1080 Will Have Exceptional Power Efficiency

The new MediaTek chipset will have support for 200MP cameras, which means we can expect upgraded cameras in the next batch of midrange phones.

Powerful cameras are a growing trend in smartphones nowadays. Surely it will be one of the features that phone buyers will consider in 2023 in buying budget phones.

Aside from the upgraded camera support, the Dimensity 1080 will have "exceptional power efficiency," according to MediaTek. Moreover, we can expect better gaming performance.

Just like the Dimensity 920, the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 is fabricated using the 6nm manufacturing process. But compared to its predecessor, it offers some improvements.

Dimensity 1080 has an octa-core CPU, with two ARM Cortex-A78 cores clocked at up to 2.6GHz and six ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at up to 2GHz, according to Android Police.

The GPU is an Arm Mali G68 which is similar to the Dimensity 920. However, it offers an improved gaming experience, such as being able to receive a call in the middle of a gaming session. Dimensity 1080 is also expected to deliver better battery life.

The new MediaTek chipset supports LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage modules. Its Image Signal Processor (ISP) supports 4K HDR video encoding and quad-camera concurrency.

It allows zero shutter lag image capture to up to 200MP. Dimensity 920 only allows 108MP image capture.

Another similar feature to its predecessor is its support for 120Hz displays. In addition, the new Dimensity 1080 supports sub-6GHz 5G networks, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity.

Dimensity 1080 Will Bring Improvement in Midrange Phone's Performance

According to Digital Trends, while there is a big leap in terms of number from 920 to 1080, there is little improvement between the two chipsets.

What can be considered a big bump from its 920 predecessor is its support for a 200MP camera and the expected better power efficiency. In addition, there are also some improvements in the ISP.

"Continuing MediaTek's legacy of optimizing power and performance, the Dimensity 1080 offers a full suite of advanced features that challenge expectations about what a 5G smartphone can do," said CH Chen, Deputy General Manager of Wireless Communications Business Unit at MediaTek.

With that said, the Dimensity 1080 is made to further enhance many of the 920 functions, including processing power, camera, and video quality.

We will see smartphones powered by the Dimensity 1080 in Q4 of 2022. According to MediaTek, the two 1080 and 920 share the same hardware and software, so companies can accelerate their time to market with this chip.

Despite the mild improvements from the previous chipset, the Dimensity 1080 still offers an upgrade in performance for midrange smartphones.
