WhatsApp Recovers From Two-Hour Global Outage; App Remains Offline in Other Areas

WhatsApp went offline out of nowhere.

Users of the popular secured messaging app from Meta have reported that they couldn't access their WhatsApp account on its web counterpart nor send or receive messages on all platforms.

Meta acknowledged the outage and announced it would restore service as quickly as it could, per CNBC.

WhatsApp Outage Details

WhatsApp users reported on social media, particularly on Twitter, that the app was down and that they either couldn't log into their accounts or they couldn't send or receive messages. According to Tech Crunch's report, users reported that the outage began around 12:20 AM PT.

Users of the app's web counterpart were greeted with a "connecting" message instead of the app's chatbox.

These reports could be seen using the hashtag #WhatsAppDown.

In addition to the inability to log in and send or receive messages, users said they couldn't update their profile information or privacy settings, either.

Social media platforms aren't the only ones seeing an increase in user complaints and reports. Global monitoring service DownDetector stated on its webpage that it received over 80,000 complaints about the outage within the first hour of the outage.

74% of these reports mentioned that users are unable to send messages, while 20% of them report problems with the app as of press time. Meanwhile, the remaining 6% said they couldn't log into the app for unknown reasons.

WaBetaInfo, another service that tracks WhatsApp's performance, stated that the issue is "server-side," meaning that the problem lies within Meta and could only be fixed until the tech giant resolves it remotely.

Additionally, it reported that managing groups, refreshing contacts lists, signing up to WhatsApp, chat back up, and even access to WhatsApp Business API were unavailable during the outage.

Meta was made aware of the issue and aknowledged it in an official statement. According to the tech giant, it is aware that people are having trouble sending messages and that it is working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, the company didn't mention what caused the outage and if it could be resolved within the day.

This outage isn't the first WhatsApp and Meta experienced. The Verge reported that this outage was the first since Meta's various platforms, which include Instagram, Messenger, Oculus, and Facebook, went down due to a configuration change to its routers.

This particular outage took six hours before services to all of Meta's social media platforms were restored.

What Is The Status Of WhatsApp Now?

We at iTechPost can confirm that WhatsApp is back online and can now be used to send and receive messages once more. WaBetaInfo confirms this, with it stating that the app was restored as of 8:51 UTC.

Although their number is steadily decreasing, there are still some users that are still reporting that they cannot use WhatsApp or send messages.

Despite that, Meta has yet to release an official statement on what caused the outage in the first place.
