President Biden, VP Harris Celebrate NASA's Artemis 1 Launch

On Wednesday, the White House celebrated the success of NASA's Artemis 1 moon rocket launch, citing its limitless possibilities for the US and the world.

The heads of state took to Twitter to congratulate the tip-off of the lunar exploration, which lets the Space Launch System mega-rocket propel the Orion spacecraft on its way to the moon.

The White House Commends The Artemis 1 Mission For Paving The Way

According to Space, US President Joe Biden personally watched the blast off of the moon rocket and called NASA to directly congratulate the agency.

In a tweet from Biden on the day of the launch, he says that putting the first woman and the first person of color on the lunar surface will inspire many students to become space explorers.

Additionally, he believes that this momentous occasion will allow America and the whole world to see the countless possibilities there are in space.

Vice President Kamala Harris also took her Twitter to applaud NASA and their private and international partners for paving a path back to the moon.

The VP, who is also the National Space Council chair, visited the Kennedy Space Station in August to see a launch attempt in person, which was called off due to technical problems.

In a meeting with the NSC in September, which was Harris's last chaired meeting before the launch of Artemis 1, she called to diversify the US space workforce.

Space writes that with the mission to improve space explorations in the future, the White House pledged to fund a pilot program to increase training in space with big companies.

This pilot program is led by Blue Origin, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and big brands like SpaceX, Amazon, and Rocket Lab.

The Executive Mansion also promised to prevent junk in orbit by cleaning up to address the growing volume of space debris caused by satellite testing.

Aside from its support for space exploration and training programs, the White House also funded a project called "Learning Lunchboxes" for communities that need extra support for students.

The White House Has Always Been And Will Be Involved With The Space Programs

While the kickoff of the Artemis 1 Moon Mission seems to be a success already, it is important to note that NASA and its space crew can still encounter issues while Orion is on its journey.

Aside from the space conditions and technical aspects of the mission which will take astronauts to the moon by 2025, moon mandates are also vulnerable to potential shifts in the White House.

According to The Atlantic, despite whatever political environment, NASA is determined to keep the Artemis program up and running until people are back on the lunar surface.

It can be remembered that it was in January 2004, during the presidency of George W. Bush, that the idea of returning astronauts to the moon began.

The White House, at the time, claimed that they did not know when it would happen, but they were determined to act on their desire to do so, Time details.

Today, 18 years later, the attempt to revisit the moon has begun with the 25-day journey of the SLS, where Orion will complete two trips around the moon before returning to Earth.
