Apple To Shut Down Dark Sky, Urges Users To Move To Weather App

On January 1st, Dark Sky, the weather app that Apple purchased in March 2020, will be discontinued, according to Mac Rumors

Apple has published a support document highlighting the Dark Sky features that have been incorporated into the Weather app, as well as a reminder to users about the closure.

Apple Has Been Warning Users Of The Shut Down For Months Now

Apple has been alerting users to the impending Dark Sky shutdown for a number of months, but word is starting to spread more widely now that app support is about to expire in less than two weeks.

With that, the Weather app now uses a large portion of the technology that Apple acquired when it acquired Dark Sky more than two years ago.

However, with its impending end, Apple has released Dark Sky features onto the Weather app, including hourly forecasts for the next 10 days as well as minute-by-minute precipitation forecasts for snow and rain.

With Dark Sky functionality on the Weather app, users can have weather modules that give detailed information on factors like humidity, amount of precipitation, visibility, wind speed, and more.

According to the tech giant, there are also high-definition weather maps and hyperlocal weather forecasts available, Mac Rumors writes.

Despite the looming shutdown of Dark Sky, the Weather app will still provide users with a great alternative app from which they can track and monitor the weather.

The Weather app has a modular layout that is dynamically modified depending on the local weather at the time, according to 9to5 Mac

Additionally, the Weather app supports real-time notifications and offers detailed maps for conditions like temperature and precipitation.

This implies that users can receive hyper-local notifications about localized precipitation, including when it will begin and end.

As a result of software updates this year, the Weather app is now accessible on iPad and Mac as well, offering many of the same features as well as Dark Sky capabilities.

How Can Users Use Dark Sky's Features On Weather App

Apple Weather provides notifications, a high-resolution map overlay, and a chart that shows precipitation at your location for the next hour down to the minute.

According to Mac Daily News, numerous features in the Weather app offer details on the current and upcoming weather.

Based on the information provided by Apple Weather, a 10-day weather forecast is available for the majority of nations and regions.

Additionally, national weather services provide information on severe weather for Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico, Thailand, the United States, and the majority of European countries and regions through the app.

Moreover, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States now all have access to next-hour precipitation forecasts and notifications.

With the Dark Sky features integrated into the Weather app, users will now be able to see the air quality in an area through temperature maps.

Lastly, the features will let users see forecasted weather conditions, including temperature, precipitation amounts, humidity, dew point, wind speed, barometric pressure, Feels Like temperature, and visibility.
