Amazon Might Get Its Own Sports App for Streaming

Amazon already has sports content included in the Prime Video subscription. However, they may plan to create an app that focuses solely on sports coverage, which could be an entirely new subscription for sports fans.

How Likely Is That to Happen?

Amazon has been making its way to becoming a preferred streaming service for sports. It already has livestreams for NFL and Premier League soccer from the UK. It also had a deal with the New York Yankees which allowed them to show some of their baseball games.

In addition to that, Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy also stated that the company was interested in expanding its reach in streaming live sports, as mentioned in Digital Trends. It's still not clear what it could mean for the sports content available on Prime Video.

If Amazon does launch a  sports app, it's possible that they would remove the sports content in Amazon Prime Video altogether. They could also keep it within the existing streaming service, but an additional payment would be needed.

The potential standalone app could be a part of Amazon's effort to bring in more revenue to make up for the rising costs brought by inflation. The company has already been looking into their services that don't generate much profit and have already conducted job cuts.

Should I Look Elsewhere for Sports Content?

That's up to you. But there are other streaming services that offer live sports coverage. It all depends on what kind of sports you want to see or if the service that comes with the subscription is worth it.

NBC's Peacock is a good choice for sports enthusiasts. They have exclusive live game coverage. The content within the subscription includes games from NFL, Premier League, MLB, golf, and NASCAR.

ESPN+ also covers live sports events like MLB, NHL, and NCAA sports events. The service has an NHL deal that provides 75 out-of-market NHL games from 2021 to 2022 and through the season from 2027-2028.

Apple TV+ already has a deal with MLB to show livestreams of Friday night games. If you're looking for streaming services for MLS games, it's important to know that Apple is now the exclusive streamer for it.

Apple was supposed to add NFL under its belt as well, but somehow the deal fell through. The tech company wasn't too thrilled about the fact that it was still not capable of being streamed internationally, as well as its issues with geographic blackouts.

Not to worry, though, since YouTube got the rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket. YouTube acquired the package which will cost around $2 billion per season, as mentioned in Tech Crunch. This will be the first time that the Sunday Ticket will be shown on other platforms since 1994.

There is a lot to choose from, and it's slowly becoming important to make a choice too. Live sports coverage right are slowly being acquired by streaming services, and soon enough, live TV coverage will be a thing of the past.
