The new subscription tier allows users to have access to two of the app's newest features and exercises. One is called "Explain My Answer" while the other involves the learner participating in playing a character called "Roleplay."

Duolingo has been working with OpenAI to incorporate its GPT-4 generative AI technology into the learning methods. The new subscription tier also has the benefits of Duolingo Super, which provides unlimited hearts, no ads, and personalized reviews through the Practice Hub.

The "Explain My Answer" feature will help the learner understand more what they answered wrong. This goes for correct answers as well. By tapping a button after an exercise, users can converse with the app's new AI tutor to ask for an explanation or further clarification.

The comprehensive learning and conversation system will help the student to have a deeper understanding of the current lessons, and feel as though they are interacting with an actual human tutor.

As for "Roleplay," the app will teach the learner how to use the language theta re learning in real-life conversation. The app has certain world characters a user can interact with to simulate a conversation. Success with the challenges will reward the user with XP (experience) points.

The challenge is a part of the app's Side Quests wherein the user can choose a character they would want to interact with. Duolingo will guide the user with the scenario they will encounter like discussing vacation plans, ordering coffee, or going shopping.

The characters that the learner will interact with are driven by AI. According to Duolingo, no interactions will be exactly alike. Users will also get feedback on how well they did, as well as tips for future conversations they might have.

Should I Try It Out?

You are welcome to try the new tier. However, you may be out of luck if you're using an Android device since it's only available for iOS devices at the moment. It is also limited to two languages which are Spanish and French. Although Duolingo claims that it will roll out more courses soon.

You can also be confident that the curriculum experts and designers in the company are regularly evaluating the content of the app as they work with AI-generated content, which is to make sure that the answers are "factually correct and have the right tone."

The scenarios are written by humans and make sure that circumstances fit with what the user is trying to learn at the course. They also create initial messages to make sure that the model will take the conversation where it should.

Duolingo admits that the AI technology used in the lessons is still not perfect. Learners can report any mistake they find by holding down the "inaccurate message" wherein a menu will appear for providing further details on the report. Thai will train the model to be more accurate.
