MoviePass Relaunch

After testing the beta out in select cities, MoviePass is ready to roll out its subscription services nationwide. You can now access theaters through the service and watch a number of movies depending on the monthly subscription you pay for.

There are more than 4,000 theater locations in the country you can visit that are operated by AMC Theaters, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark, and other chains, as reported by Engadget, which means that you will likely have access to one nearby.

As for the prices, MoviePass will still offer its previous $10 monthly subscription plan, although it no longer has the same number of movies you can watch. The $10 that have subscribers unlimited access to before will now only grant them three screenings a month.

If you go to theaters often, you might find that the $40 monthly subscription might suit your needs better. This gives you access to up to 30 movie showings a month, which is very well worth it since standard ticket pricing will only get you three to four screenings.

By September 5th, you can use the MoviePass app to make arrangements such as securing entry and reserving specific seats to see the film, but you have to make sure that the theater has partnered with MoviePass.

If you want to watch an action movie in 3D through the theater app, then you're out of luck. Reservations only apply to 2D screenings, which may be a dealbreaker for some. Then again, it's not very often that a movie comes with a 3D option.

The previous $10 subscription plan was a good deal for users, but it was simply not profitable for the company. Still, they managed to create reasonable monthly plans that are still generally cheaper than having to pay for each ticket traditionally.

Why Get a Subscription?

It's debatable whether getting a subscription to get access to theaters is still worth it, given that there are now streaming services with lower monthly fees for their subscription. The Premium plan for Netflix is $19.99, which makes it $20 cheaper than a MoviePass subscription.

So, is it really worth paying for? That depends on you really. A subscription to a streaming service lets you watch unlimited shows and movies at any time you like, and you will be doing so in the comfort of your own home.

However, theater screenings are still an entirely different experience altogether. Some prefer going to a dark theater room with a big screen along with like-minded people who are interested in the movie, which makes big movie scenes feel more emotional.

There's also the perk of viewing the movies as soon as they are released. Streaming services often show the latest movies months after they launch, so not only will you have to wait, but you may come across major spoilers from the people who have already seen them in theaters.
