WhatsApp Develops New Interface To Align With Material Design 3 Style

WhatsApp wants to have its app's interface similar to Google's latest user interface design system.

The company behind the secure messaging app is reportedly working on a new interface design to make the app aligned with Google's Material Design 3 style.

Google launched its Material Design 3 style to help creatives design for every screen, per Designware.

WhatsApp New App Interface Details

Google's Material Design 3 is a godsend for all app designers and developers - it helps and encourages them to "create designs that are personal for every style, accessible for every feed, alive and adaptive for every screen," along with bringing back creativity and excitement for Android apps.

As a result, Android apps and widgets are customizable based on users' wallpaper color palettes, and it doesn't require additional efforts from users since most already customize wallpapers.

To get with the times, WhatsApp reportedly decided to have its app's interface design aligned with Google's Material Design 3 style - by making its top app bar darker while the dark theme is enabled, per WABetaInfo. WhatsApp believes this change will add a sense of modernity to the theme and update its look, which had not received any changes from the company for many years.

A screenshot of this new interface showed that the top bar, which appeared as grey as the bottom navigation bar in the past, would adopt the same color as the one appearing in the background when the phone has dark mode enabled. This change could be seen on the WhatsApp beta for the Android 2.23.13.17 update.

While the change in the app's interface is something users appreciate, some people still believe that WhatsApp should offer a new type of dark theme for its Android app, similar to the one available in WhatsApp for iOS. The publication believes that an even darker theme based on greyscale and black color could provide "great results" in terms of performance and aesthetics for more advanced mobile phones with an AMOLED screen.

As the new interface design is still under development, it is unclear whether Google will add further changes to its interface in the foreseeable future - only time and other future updates to this feature will tell.

Other Upcoming WhatsApp Features

Aside from the new interface, WhatsApp is also working on other features to improve users' experience while using its app. You may recall that WhatsApp is working on adding the ability to pin and unpin a message automatically after a set period has passed.

It is also having its s Advanced Proxy Configuration Settings tested by beta testers to improve the app's proxy server toggle. Interestingly, the company is also testing in-app chat support for its Windows Desktop app and screen sharing during video calls, allowing users to reach WhatsApp support directly and share their screens during video calls soon, respectively.

These features could come to WhatsApp at a later date through a future update should their development go smoothly.
