Unveiling Its New Foldable Phones

In Samsung's Unpacked event this July 26th at 7 a.m. ET, the company will be showing off its new foldable phone models, which will be hosted from Seoul, South Korea. Samsung followers have been expecting this and were only waiting for a release date.

In case you missed it, Samsung already released a foldable device back in 2019, which is the Galaxy Z Fold, as well as the Galaxy Z Flip, which was released in 2020. In the event, the company will release what is likely an improved version of the mentioned models.

According to Engadget, Samsung may be improving the hinge mechanism that allows the Z Fold 5 to close flat. As for the Z Flip 5, it will feature a larger front-facing cover display. More features and improvements will be revealed during the Unpacked event.

For those who plan on ordering the Galaxy Z Fold 5 or Galaxy Z Flip 5 ahead of the release, the manufacturer is offering a $50 reservation credit. They can do so by entering their name and email on the website, which claims to offer instant trade-in credit, as well as free and easy returns.

Leaks of Samsung's Upcoming Foldables

Even if companies try their best to protect the product details from being leaked before its unveiling or release, they still find their way on the internet for the world to see, however briefly they are. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 leaks show us what we can expect.

As mentioned before, the improvements in the hinges of the phone allow it to close without a gap, which may not be a huge selling point, but it does have its benefits. For one, this improvement will make the screen creaseless.

On top view, the fold is not as obvious, but it can be irksome when you view your phone in certain angles and lights. Since it is a touchscreen smartphone, users might also be annoyed by the fact that they can feel the indent where the phone folds.

As pointed out by Tom's Guide, a flip phone that can close without a gap will also mean that it will be slimmer. The previous model like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is 0.62 inches thick when it is close, which can be bothersome for users who pocket their phones.

A closer gap might also make the phone last longer. With the hinges bearing the between the screens, it might be subjected to pressure when it's in store. This then could lead the hinges to being loose, which will likely affect the screen sooner or later.

The screen itself will have lesser pressure on certain spots when it is flat off of each other. With a gap, the parts of the screen closest to the hinges may be pushed down, which will cause stress to the screen and eventually result in damage.
