Elon Musk Plans to Put Twitter on ‘Dark Mode’ Permanently

Elon Musk must be busy with Twitter which is now called X with all the rebranding efforts, but not busy enough to think of new things to change on the platform. Apparently, the tech billionaire plans to put Twitter in dark mode with no light mode option in mind.

X is Going Dark

Twitter, before all the major changes were implemented, had two modes: light and dark. Users can choose the option that suits their taste and comfort more. Naturally, some prefer light while others prefer dark, but they won't really have a choice soon.

Musk says that the platform will soon only have "dark mode," as it is "better in every way." The key word there is "only." Users are asking Twitter to keep the light mode option for those who would prefer it and simply use dark mode as a default.

Dark mode can be helpful, especially at night when a user is scrolling through Twitter in the dark and would like a low-light display. The problem is that Musk is not offering any alternatives, which seems like a step backward since Twitter already has those options now.

In fact, there are three options to choose from. As pointed out by The Verge, there's the light mode, a sim setting where users will have a gray background, and the dark mode wherein the background is completely black.

The lack of choice is just another one on the long list of changes that people did not want, but compared to others over the last few months, a permanently dark feed is the least of Twitter's worries. The company is just lighting fire after fire, slowly destroying the once-loved platform.

Not New to the Wrong Approach

The way Twitter is tackling the issue of its declining value is a peculiar one. Instead of improving on its features and resolving existing issues, it is scrapping key features completely and making new ones that don't seem to be helping.

For instance, Twitter has been struggling with retaining its advertisers, which is a problem because a lot of the company's revenue relies on ad sales. Instead of making the necessary changes to encourage advertisers to stay, Musk goes with threats.

Brands are now required to pay $1,000 per month to keep their gold verification status. Musk says that the price would set a moderately high bar to be a verified organization. It also makes it too expensive for scammers to make millions of accounts.

Musk is not known for treating Twitter's advertisers well. Last year, Musk also tried to resolve its dwindling numbers of advertisers by threatening them. Around November 2022, clients like General Motors paused their ads to prioritize "brand safety."

The tech billionaire did not take this kindly as company leaders should, stating they were causing a massive drop in revenue and that they were "trying to destroy free speech in America," as reported by Business Insider.

A user pointed out that Musk has over 114 million followers then and that he should "name and shame" the advertisers succumbing to the boycotts. Musk responded, saying that "thermonuclear name & shame is exactly what will happen if this continues."
