YouTube Premium Launches Enhanced 1080p on Desktop

YouTubePremium's enhanced 1080p bitrate has finally landed on desktop web, globally.

The improved 1080p option was initially available to iOS users. YouTube introduced the feature last April for a small group of Premium users to try.

What is YouTube's Enhance 1080p Bitrate Feature?

The enhance 1080p premium offers more information per pixel, resulting to a higher quality viewing experience. While there have been concerns that YouTube might start downgrading the non-premium 1080p, YouTube assure that it will not be the case and the current 1080p quality will remain the same.

Bitrate refers to the depth on information in an audio or video. Some videos with better bitrate and color depth can provide better quality than 4k footage. The premium 1080p is suspected to run around 13 Mbps as compared to the standard 1080p that runs only at 8Mbps.

YouTube also promotes the premium 1080p as a way for the viewers to deepen their visual immersion with such high quality and detailed motion for their videos.

YouTube Continues Experimenting Features

As of August 2, YouTube announced that they are testing some improvements to its channel page layout where playlists will not be shown unless there is a content available in the creator's channel.

Meanwhile, the company has already rolled out its AI auto-generated summaries for easier summarization when user's do not have the luxury of time to complete the video. As always, all of these experiments are only available for a limited number of viewers to test.
