Twitter’s Rebranding Gets People Into ‘Unexplainable, Awkward Situations’

Twitter's new name is inviting chaos through misunderstanding.

Several people were caught in unexplainable, awkward situations since Elon Musk rebranded Twitter into his dream "everything app," X.com, giving them the impression they're surfing somewhere they shouldn't be.

Musk rebranded Twitter to X.com in late July, which may have been a "risky move," according to analysts.

The new Twitter logo rebranded as X, is pictured in Paris on July 24, 2023, on the account of it's owner Elon Musk, after he changed his profile picture late on July 23, 2023, to the company's new logo, which he described as "minimalist art deco," and updated his Twitter bio to "X.com," which now redirects to twitter.com.

Honey, I Can Explain

X.com, for Elon Musk, means a lot. The dream he strives to create - a "digital town square" where users can start conversations about anything and everything, leave comments about them, and eventually make payments in crypto or fiat currency.

To do so, he has to buy a platform or create one of his own. Twitter happens to give him the means to turn his dream into a reality.

Once Musk acquires Twitter, he took it down as far as he could go and built it back up to rebrand it to X.com. He even changed the name of Twitter's verification-subscription service, Twitter Blue, to X Premium to solidify the rebranding.

While Chief Twit is mighty pleased with his decision, many are against the rebranding, and for a good reason - here are a few examples:

X.com user Alex Cohen posted a screenshot of an iMessage conversation with his wife, who's asking him what's X Premium. The only thing he could only say at the time was, "How do I explain this[?]," jokingly adding that he would be sleeping on the couch due to the misunderstanding.

Another X.com user going by the username @60404 also published a similar post as Cohen's. The only difference is that @60404's screenshot was about his mom admonishing him about his X Premium subscription and that he needs to talk to them about "appropriate purchases."

"The Twitter X rebrand getting me in trouble already smh," @60404 typed for his post's caption.

If you haven't gotten the pattern yet, these people got into these situations with their loved ones because Musk's X.com sounds like an adult website. For those who are aware, many adult sites usually start with an "X" for their names, as X.com user Jesse McLaren proved in his post.

Real-Life Consequences

X.com users aren't the only ones getting into unexplainable, awkward decisions because of Twitter's new name. Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Informatics previously banned X.com from its country for violating local pornography and gambling laws - because of its name, per Gizmodo and Business Insider.

The company has already explained the situation to the Indonesian government, allowing Indonesians to access the newly rebranded site.

While advertisers are on a "wait and see approach" about their prospects in advertising with X.com, as MSN reports, the site's name might frighten some advertisers due to its name being similar to adult sites. Regardless, Twitter's rebranding is "a risky decision," as the site's previous brand is more iconic and identifiable than X.

Whether Musk can win advertisers over with the threats he is lobbing at them after the rebranding is still up for debate.
