You only need to reflect on the mainstream success of the Transformers franchise to see that people love watching robots locked in battle. This is something the anime world understands, which is why there are plenty of fantastic titles to get stuck into.

Gundam

Gundam is a classic tech/robot anime that's been going strong since 1979. The series focuses on giant robots (mecha) called 'Gundam', and it spawned an enormous cult following and inspired countless other animes including Kyoukai Senki: Kyokko No Souki.

As well as the core anime series, fans of the franchise can get stuck into Gundam Evolution, which is a game developed by Bandai Namco. Elsewhere, Netflix and Sunrise Interactive are in the process of developing live-action movies, which is a true testament to the strength of the series. Outside of digital media, there's an extensive gundam model kit range.

Magic Knight Rayearth

Look at the enormous fanbase for Sailor Moon and you'll see that animes about magical girls are extremely popular - so what happens when a series is based on magical girls transforming into mecha? Magic Knight Rayearth.

This anime derives most of its content accurately from the source material, but it also introduces Inouva, which is an animal-shaped elemental of lightning that takes human form. As well as having a solid fanbase of its own, Magic Knight Rayearth won an award at the Animation Kobe Rewards for the best theme song.

Broken Blade

Broken Blade or 'Break Blade' in Japan, contains 6 original video animations (OVAs), which are essentially anime series made for TV. This series focuses on a young man called Rygart Arrow. He lives in a world where people can control quartz, meaning he controls mecha. As well as having a number of beautifully animated battle scenes, Broken Blade spends time exploring the different relationships that define who Arrow is and why he acts the way he does.

Gunbuster

Hideaki Anno is an amazing anime director responsible for Neon Genesis Evangelion and The Secret of Blue Water, but his debut was a sci-fi action title called Gunbuster. As well as having some incredible battle scenes, Gunbuster balances life elements, social themes, and intuitive character development. Even though this anime is relatively short, the depth of the story is powerful.

The Vision of Escaflowne

If you take elements of romance, fantasy, and mecha and put them into an anime, the result is The Vision of Escaflowne. The central character is Hitomi, a girl with the ability to see into the future. Kidnapped by King Van and taken to the alternate dimension, Hitomi is soon caught up in a conflict that will influence the fate of the planet. During the war, King Van controls Escaflowne, which is a powerful mecha.

There are thousands of anime in the world converting almost every genre and topic imaginable. When it comes to technology and robots, those listed above are some of the best, but there's so much more for you to explore.
