YouTube is Testing Its AI Chatbot, Feature Through Comment Summaries

It's only a matter of time before we see AI features on YouTube as well, and the streaming giant is already on its way to testing the functions within the site. Soon enough, all users will be able to view comment summarizations and use the AI to learn more about the video.

YouTube's New AI Features

The company just announced that they are testing two experimental features for the platform, both of which will make for a more convenient and informative experience for users. However, it will only be available to those who are subscribed to YouTube Premium.

One of the features will allow you to view comments in "easily digestible themes." Instead of all the comments arranged based on the number of likes or the date it was posted, they will be divided into topics you might want to look into. This isn't available for all videos just yet.

For instance, in a MrBeast video example provided by YouTube, you can open the comments section and click on the "Topics" tab at the top. It will then generate various sections with titles like "More 7 day challenges," "No submarine," "People love Bryan the bird," and more.

With this feature, you won't have to scroll through the entire comment section to see if someone has the same idea or reaction as you. Seeing as it's still in the testing phase, the option is only available on a small number of videos in English with extensive comment sections.

The company also has a way of making sure that the sections will not be as chaotic as standard YouTube comment sections. The AI will not include content that is unpublished, held for review, contains blocked words, or comments from blocked users.

On the other hand, you may also learn more about the video by conversing with YouTube's own chatbot. The virtual assistant is generated by large language models and is trained on whatever video you're watching, as reported by Engadget.

You can ask the chatbot about the content itself or ask for recommendations based on the related media. It is similar to the experience of chatting with Bard as it also takes information from the web. Plus, you won't have to pause the video while talking to the chatbot.

These features are not automatically enabled, which means that you have the option to try it out or turn it off. YouTube Premium subscribers can try them out by heading to YouTube's experiments page, although it might not be available to some users yet.

Amazon Has the Same Function

Content summarization is useful if you don't have the time to look through all the comments. The same function is available with the retail giant only in their version, it's a summarization of product reviews.

The AI summary is a one-paragraph comment that reflects all the reviews under the product, meaning that both negative and positive aspects of customer ratings will be included in the summarized review, as reported by The Verge.
