The company's first add-ons will enable reddit moderators have an easier time to monitor and remove comment threats, bans and remove spammer contents, and create live scoreboards for sports-focused subreddits, The Verge reported.

As the feature is still in its infancy, initial batch of add-ons will be available to a select few communities and only to mods. There is no confirmation yet when the add-ons will be released from closed beta.

Reddit Add-on Features More Services to Users

Reddit spokesperson Courtney Geesey-Dorr said that the social media company's Development Platform will "serve as a way to gather learnings, test out different functionalities" for more possible uses of the add-ons.

The company is currently creating prototypes for polls and countdown timer posts, primarily to be used in "soccer league communities." Geesey-Dorr said test implementations for these add-ons will "likely" to start in the following months.

Reddit has yet to divulge all the plans for these add-ons in the future as stress tests for the platform's stability continues before opening the new features to the general public.

The first set of Development Platform add-ons is set to arrive near the year's end.

Development Platform Controversies from Reddit Users

Reddit's Development Platform came as the social media platform's replacement to previous custom third-party add-ons widespread over the site.

Earlier this year, the company increased its usage-based API pricing for the developers to shoulder alone. Many third-party apps were forced to leave the site and automated bots to stop operating with the remaining few needing to offer subscriptions to stay.

Reddit also removed its old Gold awards system in favor of the new "Contributor program" that converts Reddit Gold into actual money.

After protests from various communities for the new regulations, it remains uncertain if users will have favorable response to the new Development Platform add-ons.
