Google Photos is now rolling out the Photo Stacks feature for Android phones after its initial release to iOS in November last year.

Stacks will automatically group similar photos together for a more organized gallery.

Google Photos Launched Photo Stacks

Google Photos is utilizing AI to group similar photos using the Photo Stacks feature. Aside from grouping photos, it can also organize screenshots or photos of documents to file into easy-to-find albums.

"To help make your gallery tidier, Google Photos will automatically identify and group similar photos that were taken close together into Photo Stacks and select the top pick that best captures that moment," Google Photos product manager, Guillermo Krovblit said.

On the other hand, Google reminded that while Photo Stacks help organize your gallery view, it does not change your available storage since the photos are still there but only represented as one photo.

How Google Photos Stacks Work

The feature can be enabled and disabled through the Google Photos settings. Once done, the system will automatically stack similarly-looking photos that were taken together.

Users can simply edit each stack by reviewing the photos inside the collection. They can also have a top pick which will be the photo that will represent the stack in the Photos view.

Moreover, there is also an option to remove or add photos to the existing stack. If users find it difficult to trace the photos, they can unstack the entire photo stack and view the photos individually.

The Photo Stacks was initially made available to iOS upon its introduction. As of writing Android phones are gradually getting the feature as well, but still not widely available yet.
