Why Do People Still Buy DVDs? 8 Ways They’re Superior to Streaming

With the prevalence of streaming and subscription services, you'd think that DVDs would have died out by now. However, some still prefer them over online streaming, and there are a couple of valid reasons why they do.

1. Physical Ownership

There's something about having your own copy of a show or movie you like, and it would serve as a good display along with the merchandise or other DVDs you have. Since you already own the copy, you are free to watch it any time and as many times as you want, without worrying if the streaming service that has the title will remove it someday.

2. No Internet Connection Needed

As convenient as internet connections are, they are not always reliable as there could be outages and other factors that affect them. There are also instances where you have to cut your internet plan short for various reasons. When you have DVDs, all you need is a compatible media player, and you'll have offline entertainment just like that.

3. Free From Subscription Fees

Of course, subscribing to a streaming service will allow you to have access to all the titles in its catalog. However, if you only watch select titles anyway, you might be better off with DVD copies. With the price of streaming nowadays, you can only get your money's worth if you binge-watch several shows and movies.

4. Keeping Your Privacy

If you don't particularly like your information online, then DVDs might be the answer to your entertainment woes. You can pay with cash when you purchase them, as opposed to having to provide your name, email address, and payment details online to create a streaming account. While most streaming services are secure, some may still be subjected to cyberattacks.

5. Extra Content

There are some franchises that add extra content to DVDs that you won't usually find online or in streaming services. For example, certain DVD sets come with behind-the-scenes content, interviews with the cast, director's cuts, director insights, and more. Sometimes, they are made available online, but that's not always the case.

6. Little Tech Knowledge Needed

Not everyone is used to navigating through streaming devices like smartphones or smart TVs, especially people who are older and did not grow up with them. With all the apps available for them, it can get confusing. DVDs, on the other hand, were the go-to source of entertainment back in the day, so most would be familiar with how they work.

7. Cool Boxes/Cases

Some franchises, especially popular ones, sometimes release DVD sets that come in very cool packaging or boxes, so the DVD can be seen as the merchandise itself. Collector's editions tend to have these kinds of designs, and you can even sell them to other collectors at a higher price when they have been discontinued.

8. Better Sound Quality

With streaming services, most of the audio has already been compressed so that it can be downloaded faster. That means that the sounds from the film or show will be of lower quality. That's not the case with DVDs, so you should opt for it if you appreciate content more with theater-quality audio.
